The McKenzie Family at Ellengowan

Alexander McKenzie was born on the Isle of Skye in 1803, and married Anne McLean in 1829 at Armadale  on the Isle of Skye in the Parish of Sleat).

Alexander McKenzie travelled to australia on a bounty ship in 1937  (the William Nicol) with his wife, Anne,  and their 4 children, as follows .

Daniel b 1831 Armadale, Isle of Skye
Donald b 1832 Armadale, Isle of Skye
Alexander b 1834 Armadale, Isle of Skye

Four more children were born in the Illawarra :

Mary Ann b 1839 Fairy Meadow, NSW
Catherine b 1842 Berkley, NSW
Agnes b 1843 Springhill, NSW d 1844

It has been claimed that another child, Anne, died 1846 Berkeley, and that a death certificate has proved difficult to locate. However it is possible that this actually refers to Anne McKenzie (nee McLean) herself.

Alexander remarried 1849 Parramatta to Elizabeth Hanks, they had
Elizabeth b 1850 Balgownie, NSW
Robert b 1851 Balgownie, NSW
Hugh b 1853 Balgownie, NSW d Canowindra 1908

Elizabeth, Alexander McKenzie’s second wife, died 1886 South Logan, Wallaroo and Alexander died 1891 Belmore, Canowindra

In 1850, there is mention of the marriage of a daughter Euphemia at the Scotch Church in Sydney (Source – Sydney Morning Herald 27.2.1850). She may however be a daughter of the other Alexander McKenzie ?

By 1854, Alexander McKenzie was a member of the Illawarra Agricultural Society Committee, continuing in 1857-8, 1859-60, 1860,  (source “The Full Text of the Illawarra and its Pioneers” by Frank McCaffrey, 1922) .

Alexander and Anne McKenzie’s daughter, Mary Ann, would go onto marry Henry Thomas Hicks, eldest son of James Hicks of Austinmer, then known as North Bulli. Mary Ann’s husband, Henry Thomas Hicks, would go on to become an alderman on the North Illawarra Council. Their son, Alexander Henry Hicks, would become Mayor of the North Illawarra Council.
