Elizabeth McKenzie

Elizabeth McKenzie, (daughter of Alexander (Jun) McKenzie and Elizabeth Hanks) b. 21-03-1850 in Balgownie, d. 05-12-1935 in Mulgoa Rd, Penrith. She married Robert Smart Adams, on 01-05-1876 in Grenfell.  Robert died  04-05-1932 in Mulgoa Rd, Penrith.

(Note from Kerrie Anne Christian – Elizabeth McKenzie’s sister Anne McKenzie was also married in 1879 in Grenfell to James Hamilton. This raises the question of whether their parents, Alexander McKenzie Jnr and wife Elizabeth Hanks, were living with their family in Grenfell in the 1870’s ? In Trove there are several references to an Alexander McKenzie and an A McKenzie in Grenfell in 1873 and 1877- 1, 2). This could potentially place the McKenzie family in Grenfell in between the period that they lived in Taralga by 1863, and in Cowra/ Canowindra by 1882 ?)

Coincidentally, Elizabeth McKenzie’s husband Robert Smart Adams, had also been registered as born in the Illawarra – to ex convict Henry Adams and Elizabeth Clarke. Elizabeth Clarke was understood to be the daughter of a convict Hannah Stanley and Daniel Clarke, a free settler who had been a sailor  on a whaler ship.

What is interesting about Robert’s father, Henry Adams, is that he was apparently sent as a convict to the short lived and very little known Fort Wellington settlement at Raffles Bay on the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory – ie he was recorded as being at Raffles Bay in the 1828 Census. More information on the Fort Wellington, Raffles Bay Northern Territory including its 150th anniversary – click here  –1,  2, 3, 4, 5, 67, 8,

9 – “In a Bengal Hurkaru, of August last, we find the following transcript of a circular, that had issued from the Bankshall: — ” The foundation of Fort Wellington laid, and a new Colony established, on the 18th of June, 1827, at Port Raffles, on the North Coast of New Holland, latitude 11° 40 South, longitude 130° 40′ East, by Captain Sterling, of H. M. ship Success. “

Henry Adams, ex convict of the Prince of Orange ship, even has his own Facebook Page, as does his mother in law Hannah Stanley – page. A book (2) has been even been written about Hannah !

  1. Barbara Cavanagh says:

Myrtle Elizabeth Lorraine O’Keeffe was my great grandma.

The unknown Primmers name was George Samuel Primmer. I don’t know much about him at all but according to a clipping from the Nepean Times of Sunday June 17, 1916 he was the eldest son (so elder would imply two sons) of Mrs H Hughes, Kingswood when he married Myrtle Elizabeth Lorraine, only daughter of the late JJA O’Keeffe, of Wagga, and Mrs JD Cross of Manning River. I’ve heard he was lots older than great granma and I think she was about 40 years living as a single woman after he died. I gather she was happy about it too! It wa a ‘shotgun wedding’ I believe.

My great gran had a few children and one was my grandma Hannah Emilia Lorraine.
Lorraine (Hannah) married Hector Macdonald (“small D and don’t forget it” was what grandad said) who was born in (I think) Putney on 26th May 1904, my mother thinks.
    Lorraine remarried twice.
The first remarriage (2nd marriage) turned out to be a bigamous one (mum said that her mum and Frank got married even though he was already married in Qld, just to make great granma happy. I guess great gran didn’t know about Frank already being married).
The second remarrieage (3rd marriage) was to Ernest John Poole and they lived many many years in Blackheath, NSW until they died a few years ago, Lorraine first then Ernie.
Anyway, Lorraine and Hector had two daughters. Again it was a ‘shotgun wedding’ I think.
Grace was first then my mum Kathryn Ann.

Mum (Kathryn Ann) was born 6th July 1940 in Bourke NSW. On 16th (I think) April 1960 she married (yehaa NOT a shotgun wedding!!!) Ashton Burford Cavanagh, born Sept 1937 in Westonia WA, second son and (I think) fourth child of Melville Cavanagh (1803 – 1970 I think) and Hannah Jordan (17/11/1903- 21/2/1999, born near Manchester, England, father was Thomas Jordan)
Kathryn and Ashton had two daughters – I was firstborn – Barbara Jean Cavanagh, born Narrandera NSW 25/01/1961 then my sister Caroline Suzette born 2nd february 1963, at Woomera, SA while it was still a rocket range) dad was in the RAAF) and a secure community as a result.
I have had one daughter – Jasmine Monique (Bagatella) on 14/02/1989 in Darwin NT. Her father is Michael Samuel Bagatella born in Camperdown Childrens Hospital NSW to Leno Bagatella (born in Australia but family from Italy) and Barbara (maiden name unknown). My sister Caroline has had no children and became a Carmelite nun years ago, based in a suburb of Perth WA.

My aunty Grace had five children after marrying (was a shotgun wedding – Barry was a charmer apparently) Barry Miller of (I think) Narrandera NSW. It turns out his parents weren’t actually who he thought them to be but instead his biological mother was his aunty who never married but got pregnant to an Aboriginal man of the area. She worked and lived in Sydney so when she had the child she gave it to her sister (I think but maybe sister in law) to raise as her and her husbands baby instead). Uncle Barry only discovered this when he went to Narrandera for his ‘mothers’ funeral and one of the really old codgers told him the town secret – nobody had ever told it previously! Shame of it all was that he never had a chance to know his father or to know his mother except as aunty or I guess to tell his ‘parents’ a massive thankyou for looking after him and raising him!
Oh yes, so anyway, aunty Grace and uncle Barry had five children.
I will try to put them in order – Sharon (married a guy surname of Borger, had three kids I think, now divorced i believe), – David Miller who joined the army as an officer I think at one stage, is married I think to a Fiona and I think they have one or two kids – Next would be Karmen who married Mark Ward and had a couple of kids, – then Joanne who has been married two or three times and has a heap of kids maybe six – then Ian Miller who is married but I don’t know her name and she had a couple of kids to a previous husband and maybe they now have some of their own but I dont know for sure.
My aunty Grace also has a heap of grandkids but I don’t know them Grace remarried eventually to a guy called Keith Trench, now deceased unfortunately. He had his own children but they didn’t have any together.

Whew I think that’s it – I had no idea I knew even that much!

OH yes – I had always been told the spelling of O’Keefe was with a double F as in O’Keeffe.

Also does anyone know how the fraumfelders come into it? I know that name is in my ancestry but I haven’t figured quite how yet – a Jewish lady with surname Fraumfelder was my great granma’s grandma and I am told she paid for the RC school education for great granma (Myrtle Elizabeth Lorraine O’Keeffe, later Primmer).

    • Jophn Morris says:

Myrtle Elizabeth Lorraine O’Keeffe was my grandma. Grace & Ann were my playmate cousins at Asquith and Narranderra. Hannah [your gran] was my aunt. Your grand aunt Esme was my mother. I have lots of ammendments and additions for your ancestral story. I travel Australia a lot, where are you? Do you want to connect? and do you have a facebook page? Cheers to you my young cousin, John Morris

      • Barbara Cavanagh says:

      • Barbara Cavanagh says:

There are a few of us under my name in facebook so email is better option for initial contact at least.

      • John Morris – was Esme in the McKenzie line or the Primmer line ?

      • Barbara Cavanagh says:

Hey John Morris – I now live in Tasmania in a place called Ulverstone. It’s on the northern coast of Tassie. If you ever get down this way give us a call – I’m in the phone book (on-line Telstra White Pages book I guess, these days!).

  2. There are several Ashton’s further back in the Cavanagh family and/or it was a common name amongst the Cavanagh family in prior generations. I had and Ancestry.com account briefly and was able to look generations before John Cavanagh and Sarah Vaughan. The account was an extra expense, so I had to eliminate it due to my budget. It was great to be able to view my ancestry. My parents and I have occasionally talked to a lady called Maureen to help us with our ancestry – she gave us our link to John and Sarah Vaughan.

When I can afford it, I plan to check my haplotype (genetic jargon) and see where the Cavanagh family have congregated internationally according to their genetic profile. I want to see where on earth my relatives are which are of the nearest genetic match to me! Comprehensive genetic profiling is expensive – as much as AUD $800ish.

Ancestry accounts are a nice investment for sorting things. With the account I had, I could look at the registry of births, deaths and marriages overseas. Looking at my family history is something I would like to do more of! When time allows, I try to delve into my family records to make discoveries. The Cavanagh family originated from Dermot McMurrough in Ireland.
