Flora MacKenzie

Flora McDonell nee MacKenzie was the eldest child of Donald McKenzie and wife Christina Morrison. The following on Flora’s family began with the information shared by Donald MacKenzie in “Over the Sea from Skye“, and then was augmented and amended after a review of  NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages and Trove, etc.

Donald McKenzie was eldest son of Alexander McKenzie Snr and Flora McKinnon b. 1828 in Caligarry on Isle of Skye, Scotland, d. 11-03-1894 in “Daisy Bank”, Laggan. He married on 28-01-1851 in St Peters Presbyterian, Campbelltown to Christina Morrison, b. 1828 Strathaird Isle of Skye d. 1907 Crookwell. Christina was the daughter of Lachlan and Mary Morrison of Strathaird on the Isle of Skye.

  • Flora MacKenzie b. 1853 (cannot locate a NSW BDM for this) d. 1928 Condobolin (NSW BDM 2336/1928) married in 1885 in Argyle (nb not Wollongong) (NSW BDM 3702/1885) to Duncan MacDonell d. 1946 ? – lived at “Roslyn” near Crookwelland then moved to “Roslyn” Condobolin
    • Christina Alice May MacDonell/McDonell b. 1886 Argyle (NSW BDM 13797/1886) – d. 1939 Stockton (NSW BDM 3025/1939) – married in 1924 in Condobolin (NSW BDM 8201/1924 ) to Phillip Esmond  Calley b. 1887 Stockton  – served in WW1 – 12, 
      • Flora Ellen Calley married in 1947 in Newcastle (NSW BDM 19904/1947 ) – 1, to Dr Walter Harold Corbett, Pathologist d. 1970
      • Dorothy May Calley married in 1947 in Newcastle (NSW BDM 3657/1947) toJames Henry Dawson –12
    • William Alexander McDonell b. 1888 Laggan, Argyle (NSW BDM 14401/1888 )– d. 1952 Condobolin (NSW BDM 24124/1952 ) – lived at Strathmore and at Bimbil, Condobolin  – served in WW1 in 7th Light Horse Regiment – 1,
    • Donald Reginald McDonell b. 1890 Tuena (NSW BDM 34274/1890) d. 1965 Condobolin –1, – may not have married
    • John George Finlay/Findlay “Fin” McDonell b.1892 Binda – 1,  d. 1986  (NSW BDM 18027/1986) – accident in 1904 at Roslyn- 1,  – married in 1921 in Paddington –1, to Elsie May Smith. He served in WW1 in the 14th Field Company Engineers- 1, – living at Sans Souci, Condobolin in 1943
    • Duncan Stanley McDonall/McDonell  b. 1895 Tuena (NSW BDM 8149/1895) – d. Gympie 1946 – 1 – married in 1925 in Walgett (NSW BDM 6948/1925) to Johanna Bridget  Bowler – d. 1977 – 1
      • Kathleen McDonnell  married Noel James Daniel Burridge b. 1927 –   d. 2011  – 1, lived at Tandur Gympie – experienced a great tragedy in early 2011.
        • Peter Noel Burridge b. 1956 –  d. 2011 – married to Dianne Elizabeth Alexander b. 1958 –  d. 2011 – 1234, – worked at Queensland Rail, lived at Sarina “TRAFFIC stopped in Gympie’s CBD yesterday as a funeral procession for four family members, who were killed driving to Gympie for a funeral, made its way from St Patrick’s Catholic Church to the Gympie Cemetery.Police blocked roads for the mourners of the family of four who lived at Sarina but had close ties to the Gympie community.The Burridge family – Peter and Diane and their children Kristy and Mark – were travelling to Gympie for the funeral of Noel Burridge (father and grandfather) when they died.Early reports suggested the Burridge’s Holden Commodore sedan had clipped a semi-trailer and rolled just north of Rockhampton – their car was completely destroyed.They were driving on a stretch of Bruce Highway that is notorious for crashes on Australia Day.

          Yesterday two hearses led the funeral cortege through Gympie streets as the family was taken to their final resting place.”

          on Friday February 4th 2011 at 12 noon followed by a Committal Service at the Gympie Cemetery.Relatives and friends in the Sarina and Mackay area are respectfully invited to attend A Memorial Service to be held in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Range Road, Sarina on Monday Feb. 7th 2011 at 10.00am.
