Taralga Timeline for John McKenzie son of Alexander Jnr

John McKenzie (1835 – 1918), fourth son of Alexander McKenzie Jnr and first wife Ann McLean lived most of his life in Taralga, after emigrating as a toddler from the Isle of Skye in 1837 and living in the Illawarra until about 1862-1863. He is believed to be the only child of Alexander Jnr’s first marriage, who we can confidently confirm moved to the Taralga area with his father and step mother in the 1860’s.  By the late 1870’s John’s father, step mother and the children of the second marriage had left the Taralga area, seeming to be around Grenfell and finally Canowindra – Cowra.

Thus John is the only one of Alexander McKenzie Jnr’s children who remained in the Taralga area.

John and his wife Rebecca had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Only two of these remained in the Taralga area, viz Hugh and Archibald – the others had left the area over the years from about 1893 to 1930 – as summarised below.

  • 1863 – birth of John’s youngest sibling Christina b 1863 Taralga, Goulburn – daughter of Alexander McKenzie Jnr and his second wife  Elizabeth Hanks
  • 1865 – married Rebecca Rook  in the Church of Scotland, Redbank, Taralga,
  • 1866 – birth and death of John’s first child, Sarah McKenzie
  • 1867 – birth of John’s second child, John Alexander McKenzie, often known as Alex – his birth and death were both registered as John Alexander McKenzie however – he had left the Taralga area by 1913
  • 1869 – birth of John’s third child, George William McKenzie at Marmont Flat, Taralga – he had left the Taralga area by 1900
  • 1871 – birth of John’s fourth child, Donald McKenzie at Marmont Flat, Taralga – he had left the Taralga area by 1893 – 1894
  • 1874 – birth of John’s fifth child Angus McKenzie at Marmont Flat, Taralga – he had left the Taralga area by 1919
  • 1875  – birth of John’s sixth child known as John and whose birth was registered as John McKenzie and his electoral roll registrations later showed him as John Alexander McKenzie, curious considering it is the same name as his eldest brother. He was living at Narromine by 1930, and it is uncertain when he had left the Taralga district
  • 1876 – John’s father, step mother and children of Alexander Jnr’s second marriage seem to have left Taralga,  as the eldest child Elizabeth McKenzie married Robert Smart Adams in Grenfell
  • 1878 – birth of John’s seventh child Hugh McKenzie
  • 1880 – birth of John’s eighth child Ann Jane McKenzie (later Cassera) – she married in St Leonards, Sydney in 1904 and remained there after her marriage
  • 1882 – birth of John’s ninth child Elizabeth Mary McKenzie (later Shaw) at Taralga – she remained in the area until at least 1907, but by 1930 was living in Sydney
  • 1882 – first marriage of one of John’s siblings by step mother Elizabeth Hanks – ie Archibald McKenzie to Annie Selina Hannan and was registered in Cowra, suggesting that Alexander Jnr had by then moved to the Cowra area
  • 1885 – birth of John’s tenth child, Archibald McKenzie – registered at Goulburn – he remained in the Taralga area until his 1941 death
  • 1889 – birth of John’s eleventh child, Charles McKenzie – he appears to have been living in Cowra by 1919, at the time of the death of his son Angus’ 1919 death there
  • 1906 – marriage of John’s tenth child, Archibald McKenzie to Elizabeth A Howarth in Crookwell – Archibald remained in the Taralga area until his 1941 death, and similarly his widow remained in the area until her 1946 death
  • 1916 – marriage of John’s seventh child Hugh McKenzie to Annie Elizabeth McNielly at Taralga – Hugh remained in the Marmont Flat Taralga area until his 1919 death, and similarly his widow Annie remained there until her 1972 death
  • 1941 – death of John’s tenth child, Archibald McKenzie in the Taralga area
  • 1946 – death of Elizabeth the widow of John’s tenth child Archibald McKenzie
  • 1959 – death of John’s seventh child Hugh McKenzie in the Marmont Flat Taralga area
  • 1968 – Hugh’s daughter Grace Elizabeth McKenzie still living at Marmonts Flat
  • 1972 – death of Annie the widow of John’s seventh child Hugh McKenzie in the Marmont Flat Taralga area
  • 1972 – Hugh’s daughter Grace Elizabeth McKenzie no longer registered on electoral roll as living at Marmonts Flat under the surname McKenzie
  • 1980 – Hugh’s daughter Sylvia Joan McKenzie (Saville) still living in the Taralga – Crookwell area
  • 1980  – Hugh’s son John Alexander McKenzie living at Marmonts Flat
  • 2004 – possible death of Hugh’s son John Alexander McKenzie at Goulburn

  3. Marlie Lillian “Marie” McKenzie (b. before 1922 d. 1981 Goulburn ? ) married in Goulburn in 1946 – 1, to Lovell Leicester Fitzgibbon b. 1915,  who served in WW2   – still living in Goulburn in 1980
  4. Margaret Anne McKenzie married in 1949 in Goulburn – 1, 2, to  Murray Clifford Havenstein (he had been previously  married   in 1944 to Dorothy Gardner) – they lived in Sydney after their marriage
  5. John Alexander McKenzie – (b. about 1927 – possibly d. 2004 ? –1, ) – living at Marmonts Flat until 1980 (Electoral Roll) – he may not have married ?
  6. Grace Elizabeth McKenzie (b. about 1928 ) – living at Marmonts Flat until 1968 (Electoral Roll) but is not shown at Marmont’s Flat under her maiden name in 1972 nor 1980 – she may not have married or not married until after 1968 ?
