Neil

Neil McKenzie, born 1801 or 1808, was married in 1835 in Parish of Sleat to Christina Robertson, before they left the Isle of Skye in 1837 to come to Australia with their eldest child, John, born in 1837.

In the 1841 Census, Neil is recorded as living on the Hern(e)/Heron/ Hearne Farm estate of James Shoobert, with his wife and a male and female child, each aged 2-7 years, presumably eldest son John and eldest daughter Sarah. Note – James Shoobert had been a Master Mariner, Farmer and Coalmine Proprietor. Herne Farm was believed to be in the American Creek Figtree area.

They settled in the Five Islands area near Lake Illawarra – in 1855, Neil McKenzie was listed as a Leaseholder in the Illawarra Lake area on the Historical Electoral Roll for Wollongong 1855-1856.

Neil died unexpectedly in October 1858, and the obituary notices also mentioned his two older brothers, Alexander Snr of Ellengowan and Alexander Jnr of Bulli – SMH 16.10.1858, widow Christina sought probate 25.2.1859. Christina died several years later in 1860.
